China's capital city of Beijing has started a check on data centre providers' involvement in cryptocurrency mining, a power-intensive operation that could undermine the nation’s efforts to reduce emissions.

The Beijing Municipal Bureau of Economy and Information Technology issued an “emergency notice” on Tuesday, requiring data centre operators to report their involvement in cryptocurrency mining business, power consumption by these companies in the past year and its percentage amount to the total power consumed by the data centre, with a deadline at noon on Wednesday.
