China pledges to strengthen supervision of new entrants into the “chaotic” semiconductor industry after a number of project collapses amid Beijing’s efforts to boost investment in home-grown computer chips and reduce its reliance on foreign technology.

Some companies “with insufficient knowledge of integrated circuit development” have “blindly entered into projects”, said Meng Wei, a spokeswoman with the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), China's top economic planner, at a press briefing on Tuesday.
