China should allow macro leverage to rise further – PBOC official

Chinese central bank officials said the authority should allow the macro leverage ratio to rise further this year and step up the financial sector's support for the real economy, in a bid to offset the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

In recent years, the rapid growth of macro leverage ratio has been contained, said Ruan Jianhong, head of the statistics department of the People's Bank of China (PBOC). "In 2019, China's macro leverage ratio grew by 5 percentage points, a smaller rise compared to an average annual increase of 10 percentage points between 2008 . . .
