China’s consumption rose significantly on first day of Labor Day holiday – commerce ministry

Chinese major retailers and catering companies saw their total sales on April 29, the first day of the five-day Labor Day holiday, rise by 21.4% from the same period in 2022, according to data release by the Ministry of Commerce. 

In particular, retail sales of communication equipment surged by 30.5% from a year ago, and retail sales of clothing, shoes/hats, gold, silver, jewelry, and tobacco and alcohol rose by 20.9%, 17.6%, 17.4%, and 16.8%, respectively, showed the data. 

Major catering companies’ sales climbed by 36.9% year over year on the first day, showed the data.
