China’s electricity generation grew at much faster pace in July, coal-fired power generation returned to growth

China’s electricity generation grew by 4.5% in July from a year earlier to 805.9 billion kWh, accelerating from the 1.5% growth in the previous month, according to the data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Monday.

For the first seven months of the year, electricity generation reached 4.77 trillion kWh, rising 1.4% from the same period last year, showed the data.

Coal-fired power generation returned to growth in July, wind power and hydro power grew at a slower pace, nuclear power saw declines narrow last month, while solar power generation grew at a faster rate, said the NBS.

Coal-fired power generation grew by 5.3% in July from a year earlier, compared to the 6% fall in June; hydro power generation rose by 2.4%, slowing sharply by 26.6 percentage points from the previous month; wind power generation grew by 5.7%, slowing by 11% from the prior month; solar power generation fell 3.3%, narrowing by 5.7 percentage points from the drop in the month before; and solar power generation grew by 13%, accelerating by 3.1 percentage points from July, showed the data.
