China’s National Energy Administration (NEA) on Friday held a meeting about increasing coal production and ensuring coal supply, according to a statement on the day.

Chinese coal miners produced 2.194 billion tonnes of coal in the first half of the year, rising 11% from a year earlier, growing by double-digit growth for five consecutive months, and that has led to significantly increase in coal inventories at power plants and ports, said the NEA.

China needs to make continuous efforts to increase coal production as coal consumption increases further amid China’s efforts to stabilize economic growth and coal imports remain under pressure, it said.

The regulators told related government departments and coal miners to strengthen arrangements, step up production, accelerate releases of advanced coal capacity and maintain steady coal imports, it said.
