China’s industrial production slowed significantly in Nov amid Covid curbs

China’s industrial output grew by 2.2% in November from a year earlier, according to the National Bureau of Statistics, compared to the 5% growth in the previous month.

In breakdown, output in the mining sector grew by 5.9% on year in November, accelerating by 1.9 percentage points from the previous month, likely boosted by the government’s efforts to ensure energy supply.

Output in the manufacturing sector grew by 2% last month from a year earlier, slowing by 3.2 percentage points from the previous month, while output in the utilities sector fell 1.5%, showed the data.

While a few new energy industries’ production continue to post rapid growth, most sectors’ production slowed down or slipped into declines.

Output in the automobile manufacturing sector grew by 4.9% in November from a year earlier, slowing significantly by 13.8 percentage points from the previous month, and output in the computer, telecommunication and electronic equipment manufacturing sector fell by 1.5% on year, compared to the 9.4% growth in October.

Steel output grew by 7.1% year over year in November, slowing by 4.2 percentage points from the previous month, while output of cement and automobiles slipped into declines, down 4.7% and 9.9%, respectively. Electricity output grew by only 0.1% on year in November, slowing by 1.2 percentage points from a year earlier.

In contrast, output in new energy, new material and high-tech industries maintained rapid growth last month, with output of new energy vehicles rising by 60.5%, showed the data.
