Smartphone shipments in mainland China declined by 10% in the second quarter from a year earlier to 67.4 million units, according to data from market research firm Canalys.

The full-year shipments in China are expected to be well below 300 million units, which would be the worst performance since 2012, said the reports.

By vendors, Vivo shipped 13.2 million units of smartphone in China market in the second quarter, returning to the top spot, and it’s followed by Honor which shipped 13 million units and OPPO which shipped 11.8 million units. Xiaomi and Apple shipped 10.6 million units and 9.9 million units, respectively, according to the report.

The online promotions in the second quarter, to some extent, met pent-up demand after the Covid-19 lockdowns were lifted and boosted sales, but failed to bring the overall performance to the year-ago level, said the report, adding that only Viov and Honor managed to achieve positive growth.

This year is likely to be the most difficult year since the start of the Covid pandemic and it’s unlikely to see V-shaped rebound in the third and fourth quarter of the year, therefore, retaining the current market share and users will be smartphone vendors’ top priorities, it said.
