China's thermal coal futures surged after the Spring Festival holiday, prompting the regulators to send warnings and the exchange to hike margin requirement.

In the two trading days after the holiday break, the thermal coal futures contract jumped more than 5% on Monday and surged by the daily limit of 10% on Tuesday, hitting 885 yuan per tonne, the highest level since October last year.
