Chinese automaker BYD will recall a total of 52,928 Tang DM electric vehicles manufactured from April 5, 2021 to April 18, 2022 due to a safety hazard with the battery pack, starting from July 29, according to a statement on the website of the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR).

The latest recall is an expansion of the one issued on April 29, which showed that BYD recalled a total of 9,663 Tang DM electric vehicles produced from September 2, 2021 to March 14, 2022, starting from April 29.

BYD will task authorized dealers to inspect the vehicles within the recall area and replace the battery packs free of charge if there is leakage in the packs or if the tray permeability valve mounting surface is uneven.

Separately, BYD officially launched its new sedan, the BYD Seal, after pre-sales of the model began in late May. The BYD Seal, seen as one of rivals to the Tesla Model 3 in China, will begin deliveries in August.

Compared to the pre-sale prices announced on May 20, the official launch prices of all versions of the BYD Seal have been reduced by 3,000 yuan.

BYD offers four versions of the Seal with the following specific post-subsidy selling prices:

  • The standard-range rear-wheel-drive Elite version with a CLTC range of 550 km starts at 209,800 yuan ($31,130).
  • The standard range rear-wheel-drive Premium version with a range of 550 km starts at 222,800 yuan.
  • The long-range rear-wheel-drive version with a range of 700 km starts at 259,800 yuan.
  • The four-wheel-drive performance version with 650 km of range starts at 286,800 yuan.
