An increasing number of Chinese cities are ramping up COVID-19 control measures in a scramble to halt widening outbreaks.

As of Oct. 24, 28 Chinese cities were implementing varying degrees of lockdown measures, with around 207.7 million people affected, according to a note from Nomura.

Guangzhou, the capital of South China’s Guangdong province, on Thursday locked down more streets and neighbourhoods and kept people in their homes in more areas in a COVID flare-up that has lasted into its fourth week.

Wuhan local authorities have order more than 800,000 people in one district to stay at home until Sunday after reporting around 20 to 25 new cases a day this week. Thie city suspended the sale of pork in parts of the city after authorities said one case was found linked to the local pork supply chain.

In Xining, capital of Northwest China’s Qinghai province, residents are facing food shortages and price inflation for essential goods as the authorities tries to contain a COVID flare-up. To reduce the risk of transmission, some vegetable and fruit stores have been closed and put under quarantine,” said a local official.

Other large cities including Zhengzhou, Datong and Xian have implemented new curbs this week to curb outbreaks.
