Dazhou, a prefecture-level city in Southwest China’s Sichuan province, said that if it’s unable to ease the ongoing power shortage even after it has made all possible efforts, it will restrict power use by residential users for two-and-a-half hours, according to a notice released by Dazhou Electric Power Group on Tuesday afternoon.

Since August 7, due to the high-temperature weather and tight power supply across Sichuan province, major areas in Dazhou city have been facing a large power shortage, it said.

To cope with the severe situation of excessively high power load during peak hours and the shortage in power supply, the company has implemented multiple measures including asking industrial users to suspend production and restrict power use in an orderly way and it’s trying everything it can to ensure power supply to residential users, it said.

Sichuan province launched level-three alert for power shortage, the third highest in the current system and will make an all-out effort to guarantee power supply to household users, the local authority said at a meeting on Monday.

Power supply situation in Sichuan has become more severe and the region is now facing “double shortage” in both power load and power supply volume, the local authority said at the meeting. Peak power load is expected to rise by 25% from that in 2021 and it’s going through the most difficult phase for power supply, it said.

Sichuan will expand the restrictions on electricity consumption by industrial enterprises in 19 cities of the province, with industrial power users on the list subject to the restrictions required to suspend production during the period of August 15 – 20, according to a notice released by the Sichuan provincial authority and the local branch of the State Grid of China on Monday.
