Thermal coal prices in the international market surged by nearly 30% within a week to hit a new record amid escalating Russia-Ukraine tensions, driving higher China's domestic coal prices.

The Newcastle benchmark thermal coal spot price index surged more than 19% on Wednesday to hit a new record high of $317.25 per tonne, rising 29.87% from a week earlier, according to information from the China Coal Transportation and Distribution Association.
