South China’s Guangdong province saw its peak power load hit a new record of 142 million kW on Monday, rising by 4.89% from the peak power load last year, according to the China Southern Power Grid, one of two state power grids in China and covers five southern provinces – Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, Guizhou and Hainan.

Peak power load in several cities in Guangdong province including Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Dongguan, Foshan, Huizhou and Chaozhou all hit all-time highs on Monday amid wide-spread heatwaves, it said.

In the provincial capital city of Guangzhou, peak power load hit 22.41 million kW at 13:42 on Monday, local time, rising by 7.85% from the peak power load of 20.78 million kW last year, said the city’s power supply authority, adding that power load is expected to increase further as power consumption by air conditioners rises further amid high-temperature weather.

In Guangdong, when temperature is above 35 degrees Celsius, each one additional one degree will lead to 3 – 5 million kW increase in power load, according to the China South Grid. Since July, China Southern Power Grid’s power load have exceeded 200 million kW for 13 days, it said.
