The city of Shanghai will issue significantly more car license plates this year and provide subsidies to encourage car owners to replace order cars, in a bid to support the car manufacturing sector and the economy ravaged by the coronavirus outbreak.

The city will offer 40,000 more passenger car license plates on top of the originally planned amount this year, the local government said in a statement on Thursday. Shanghai imposed car purchase restrictions in 1994 and car buyers need to purchase licence plates in auction.
