Chinese President Xi Jinping on June 5 had a phone call with US President Donald Trump at the latter’s request, reported China’s state media.
In order to correct the course of the large ship of China-US relations, it’s crucial that both sides steer it properly and set a clear direction—especially by eliminating various interferences and even sabotage, Xi Jinping said.
Following the US side’s proposal, the lead officials for economic and trade affairs from both countries held talks in Geneva, marking an important step toward resolving economic and trade issues through dialogue and consultation, and it was widely welcomed by all sectors in both countries as well as by the international community, domonstrating that dialogue and cooperation are the only correct choices, he noted.
Both sides should make full use of the economic and trade consultation mechanisms already established, uphold an attitude of equality, respect each other’s concerns, and strive for win-win outcome, Xi said.
“In this regard, China is sincere, but also principled. The Chinese people have always honored their word with action—once a consensus is reached, both parties should adhere to it.”
After the Geneva talks, China has implemented the agreement with seriousness and diligence, and the US side should objectively assess the progress made and lift its negative measures against China, he said.
The two sides should enhance exchanges in various fields including diplomacy, economy and trade, the military, and law enforcement, in order to increase mutual understanding, reduce misunderstandings, and strengthen cooperation.
Xi emphasized that the US should handle the Taiwan issue prudently and avoid allowing a very small number of “Taiwan independence” separatists to drag China and the U.S. into a dangerous situation of conflict and confrontation.
Trump said he had great respect for President Xi, and US-China relations are very important, according to the report.
The US welcomes the Chinese economy’s strong growth, there is a lot of good that US-China cooperation can accomplish, and the US will continue to adhere to the One-China policy, Trump said.
The economic and trade talks in Geneva were very successful, with a good agreement reached, and the US is willing to work with China to implement the agreement, and also welcomes Chinese students to study in the US, he said.
Xi welcomed Trump to visit China again, to which Trump expressed sincere thanks. The two leaders agreed that their teams would continue to implement the Geneva consensus and hold a new round of talks as soon as possible.
This was also the second phone call between the two leaders since Trump was re-elected as US President. Previously, on January 17, 2025, on the eve of the inauguration of the current US administration, Xi had a phone call with then President-elect Trump at his request.
At that time, both leaders attached great importance to their interactions and both hoped that China-US relations would have a good start in the new US presidential term. Xi said he was willing to promote greater progress in China-U.S. relations from this new starting point.
