Australia’s discriminatory restrictions on TikTok are not conducive to safeguarding Australia’s national security, but will instead damage the international community’s confidence in Australia’s business environment and harm the interests of Australian companies and people, China’s Ministry of Commerce said at a press briefing on Friday in response to a question about Australia’s move to ban TikTok on government mobile devices.

China has always encouraged companies to conduct international operations in accordance with market principles and rules and to comply with the laws and regulations of the countries where they operate, the ministry said.

“We urge the Australian side to treat all types of enterprises fairly and justly, provide an open, transparent, and non-discriminatory business environment, and create a favorable atmosphere for the development of China-Australia economic and trade cooperation,” it said.
