Global EV battery installations surged 44% on year in Jan – Oct, Chinese battery producers’ market share rose to 63.3% – research

Battery installation for global electric vehicles (EV, PHEV, HEV) reached about 552.2 GWH in the first ten months of the year, surging 44% from a year earlier and exceeding the full-year volume of 517.9 GWH in 2022, despite the slowing in the global EV market and increasing uncertainties in the EV battery market, according to South Korean research firm SNE Research .

Among the world’s top ten battery producers, six companies are from China, including CATL, BYD Company, CALB, Gotion High Tech, Eve Energy and Sunwoda Electronic, three from South Korea, including LG New Energy, SK On and Samsung SDI, and one from Japan, Panasonic, showed the data. 

Six Chinese battery producers’ combined global market shares reached 63.3% in the ten-month period, rising by 0.4 percentage point from the 62..9% in the period of January – September and rising by 4.5 percentage points from the 58.8% in the same period last year. The three South Korean battery producers’ market share stood at 23.4%, falling by 0.4 percentage point from the first nine months of the year and down 1.1 percentage point from a year earlier. 

CATL remained the world’s top battery company with installation of 203.8GWH in the first ten months of the year, surging 51.1% from a year earlier, with a global market share of 36.9%, rising by 0.1 percentage point from the first nine months of the year. It’s followed by BYD Company with battery installation of 87.5 GWH in the January – October period, surging 66.5% year over year, with a global market share of 15.8%, in line with the market share in the first nine months.
