Chinese banks see the amount of potential bad loans increased significantly in the first quarter as businesses were hurt by the coronavirus outbreak, with retail loans such as credit card loans hit the hardest.

Chinese banks' non-performing loan (NPL) ratio remained largely stable in the first quarter despite the epidemic, but the amount of so-called "special mention loans", lending potentially at risk of becoming NPLs surged, shows banks' financial statements for the quarter.
