China’s automobile sales returned to growth in April for the first time in 21 months as pent-up demand was unleashed after the country lifted coronavirus lockdown measures, but new-energy vehicle sales slumped further.

In April, China’s overall car sales reached 2.07 million units, up 4.4 per cent from a year earlier, China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) said, the country’s largest auto industry association.

“The sales recovery in April was weaker than expected but stronger rebounds are expected in the next two months” as pent-up demand continued . . .
