China, the world’s largest automobile market, should not look to ban the sales of new gasoline and diesel vehicles while promoting electric vehicles, said an expert in the government's advisory body, diverting from the strategy adopted by many other countries.

China shouldn’t set a firm deadline for phasing out fossil-fuel vehicles, said Wang Binggang, the head of the advisory panel for the government on the matter, at an industry conference this week.

“We don’t want to kill fuel cars,” he said. “Some countries have a policy banning fossil fuel cars . . .
