China’s lithium prices surge amid growing sales of electric vehicles, tight supply

Lithium prices in China have been surging after hitting a near record low in mid-2020, driven by tight supplies and robust growth in new-energy vehicle (NEV) sales in the world’s biggest auto market.

Prices for battery-grade lithium carbonate, a key metal used in batteries for electric vehicles, surged to 59,000 yuan ($9,102) per tonne on Monday, up by nearly 50 per cent from the prices in August 2020, according to data from the Shanghai Metals Market (SMM).

Prices of industrial grade lithium carbonate averaged 55,000 yuan per tonne . . .
