China's coal prices continue to surge in the new year driven by strong demand from power plants and downstream industries and falling inventories.

As of January 15, the price of 5,500 kcal/kg coal from Shanxi province at Qinhuangdao port stood at 972.5 yuan per tonne, rising by 115 yuan per tonne from the previous week. The Qinghuangdao 5,500 kcal/kg coal price stood at 956 yuan per tonne, rising 96 yuan per tonne from the week before.
