The Chinese government will continue to provide strong support to its semiconductor industry, the country's Minister of Industry and Information Technology said on Monday, as China seeks to reduce its reliance on chip imports amid tensions with the US and a global shortage of auto chips.

The semiconductor industry is “the cornerstone of the information society”, Xiao Yaqing, head of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) said at a press conference, and it will enjoy a “market-oriented and international business environment under the rule of law”.
