Chinese banks saw credit card business shrink last year, the biggest lender saw credit card transactions drop nearly 20%

Chinese banks saw their credit card business shrink and credit card non-performing loan ratio climb last year due to the impact of the Covid-19 outbreak.

Among the 15 listed commercial banks that have announced credit card business performance for 2020, five banks saw credit card transactions decline, four banks saw credit card overdraft decline and seven banks saw credit card non-performing loan ratio (NPL) climb. Only two of the banks issued close to or higher than 10 million new credit card last year.
