China’s likely to face a thermal coal shortage of more than 62 million tonnes this year as coal demand grows at a faster pace than supply.

Due to the low base in coal output in 2020 amid the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, China's coal output is expected to grow by 4.5 per cent in 2021, while coal demand will likely increase by 7.7 per cent helped by economic recovery, according to Gao Minguiyu, chief analyst at the research institute of SDIC Essence Futures.
