China's second-quarter GDP growth slowed sharply as low base effect fades, while retail sales and industrial production in June grew faster than expected.

The country’s gross domestic product (GDP) grew 7.9 per cent in the second quarter from a year earlier, showed data released by the National Bureau of Statistics on Thursday. That fell short of 8.1 per cent growth expected by economists from 15 major financial institutions.

That represent a sharp slowdown from the 18.3 per cent in the first quarter of the year which was partly driven . . .
