China releases new rules on unfair internet competition amid tightening scrutiny on tech sector

China’s top market regulator on Tuesday released draft rules targeting unfair competition and use of data amid the country’s tightening scrutiny of monopolistic behavior in the internet sector.

According to the draft rules published by the State Administration of Market Regulation (SAMR), practices such as conducting fake orders and reviews, false advertising, misusing big data to charge unfair prices, hiding negative reviews and giving out cash incentives to entice positive reviews constitute unfair competition.

Companies will be banned from using big data, algorithms and other technical means to influence user choice or carry . . .
