China’s average daily booking volumes for transportation, hotels, and tourist attraction sites during the period of April 29 – May 1 surpassed the peak levels seen during the Spring Festival holiday, according to data from online travel agency Tongcheng Travel.

On April 29 alone, car bookings on Tongcheng platform hit an all-time high, with booking volume representing 1.9 times of the peak volume during this year’s Spring Festival, showed the data.

Among domestic destinations, the popularity of travels to third- or lower-tier cities has grown rapidly, with hotel bookings in third to fifth-tier cities surging by more than 150% from a year earlier, showed the data.

With the continuous relaxation of policies for cross-border travels and the increase in international flights, China’s outbound travels are also recovering at a faster pace, and during the May Day holiday, overseas hotel bookings on the platform surpassed the same period in 2019, and international flight bookings returned to the 2019-level, said Tongcheng.
