China’s factory activity slipped back into contraction in Apr, non-manufacturing sector grew at slower pace

China’s manufacturing activities slipped back into contraction after expanding for three consecutive month, with the official manufacturing PMI for April coming in at 49.2%, compared to 51.9 in the previous month, according to the NBS. 

Among the five sub-indexes, those for production and suppliers’ delivery time remained in the expansionary territory, while those for new orders, raw material inventory and employment were in contraction, showed the data.

The sub-index for production was 50.2%, falling by 4.4 percentage points from the previous month, while the sub-index for new orders was 48.8%, falling by 4.8 percentage points to slip into contraction.

The sub-indexes for raw material inventory fell by 0.4 percentage point to 47.9%, for employment fell 0.9 percentage point to 48.8% and for suppliers’ delivery time fell by 0.5 percentage point to 50.3%.

China’s non-manufacturing activities grew at a slower pace in April, with the official non-manufacturing PMI coming in at 56.4, compared to 58.2 in the previous month, according to NBS data.

In breakdown, construction industry’s PMI was 63.9 in April, falling by 1.7 percentage points from the previous month, while the service industry’s PMI was 55.1, falling by 1.8 percentage point from the previous month, showed the data.

The sub-index for new orders of the non-manufacturing sector was 56%, falling by 1.3 percentage point from the previous month, with that for construction sector rising by 3.3 percentage point to 53.5% and that for the service sector falling by 2.1 percentage point to 56.4%, showed the data.

China’s composite PMI, which tracks both manufacturing and non-manufacturing PMI, fe ll to 54.4 in April, down 2.6 percentage point from the previous month, according to the data.
