China’s first-half meat output hit record, meat imports slid 32% on year

China’s total output of pork, beef, mutton and poultry meat reached 45.19 million tonnes in the first half of the year, marking a new record high for the same period and rising by 2.28 million tonnes or 5.3% from a year earlier, according to a report released by the China Meat Association.

In breakdown, output of pork, beef and mutton reached 29.39 million tonnes, 3.02 million tonnes and 2.12 million tonnes, respectively, rising by 8.2%, 3.8% and 0.7% from a year earlier, while output of poultry meat fell by 0.8% on year to 10.67 million tonnes, according to the report.

Prices of pork, beef and mutton slid by nearly 20% year on year in the first half, while prices of poultry meat remained largely stable, said the association.

China meat imports continued to decline in the first half, sliding 32% from a year earlier to 3.46 million tonnes, after a 5.4% drop in 2021, showed the data. Imports of pork tumbled 65% on year in the first half to 805,000 tonnes.
