While China’s domestic tourist trips and tourism revenue exceeded pre-pandemic-levels, the per capita tourist spending was much lower than four years ago.

Domestic tourists spent an average of 510 yuan during the May Day holiday, a drop of 15.4% from the 2019-level, and 43% of young tourists spent less than 500 yuan per person, according to a report released by the online travel agency Trip.com.

That’s in contrast to the trend before 2019 when per capita tourist spending showed a year-on-year increase. For example, domestic tourists spent an average of 603 yuan per person during the May Day holiday in 2019, an increase of 8.6% from 2018.

Analysts say that people are more cautious about high-end, high-risk, and high-cost tourism products such as inter-provincial, cross-border, and long-distance tours and tend to choose low-end, low-risk, and low-cost tourism products such as local, short-distance and self-driving tours, and on the other hand, people are more rational in their travel expenses and tend to save spending by booking discounted packages, participating in group-buying activities, etc.
