China’s port container throughput accelerated in July, freight and passenger volume fell at slower pace – transport ministry

China’s container throughput reached 26.36 million TEUs in July, rising 11.2% from a year earlier, accelerating by 4.7 percentage points from the growth in June, according to the official Xinhua News Agency, citing data from the Ministry of Transport.

Cargo throughput at China’s ports reached 1.34 billion tonnes in July, rising by 5.7% from a year earlier, compared to a year-on-year drop of 2.3% in June, according to the data. In breakdown, cargo throughput for domestic and international trade rose by 7.35 and 2%, respectively.

China’s fixed-asset investment in transportation reached 330.9 billion yuan in July, rising by 4.1% from a year earlier, and of that, road and waterway investment reached 259.1 billion yuan, rising 7.5% from a year ago, according to the ministry.

The country’s total freight volume reached 4.42 billion tonnes in July, falling 0.8% from a year earlier, narrowing by 1.1 percentage point from the drop in June, showed the data.

Passenger volume reached 620 million in July, sliding 26.1% from a year earlier, narrowing by 5.3 percentage points from the drop in June, with the declines in road and waterway passenger volume narrowing by 4.3 percentage points and by 19 percentage points, respectively, said the ministry.

In the 36 major cities, passenger volume reached 3.99 billion in July, sliding 15.6% from a year earlier, narrowing by 1.7 percentage points from June, it said.
