China’s state railway operator saw H1 revenue rise 19.6%, net loss narrowed sharply

The China State Railway Group, the country’s sole state-owned railway operator, reported a revenue of 580.7 billion yuan for the first half of the year, surging by 19.6% or 95 billion yuan from a year earlier.

Net loss reached 11.1 billion yuan, it said, narrowing sharply from a net loss of 69.3 billion yuan a year earlier, but still significantly higher than a loss of 205 million yuan during the same period in 2019.

The overall performance in the first half of the year was better than expected, with revenue from passenger transportation totalling 224.8 billion yuan, surging 133% from a year earlier, the company said. 

The average number of trains operated per day was 9,311 in the first half, surging 54.4% from a year earlier, and the number of passenger trips reached 1.69 billion, jumping 122.4%, it said.

Railway passenger trips surged in the second quarter, with the daily passenger trip on April 29 hitting a new record high of 18.9 million, it said.
