China's thermal coal prices have been rising rapidly recently amid expectations of tighter supply as the authorities step up safety inspections after a series of accidents.

Spot price for 5,500 kcal/kg thermal coal price compiled by the state-backed China Coal Transportation and Distribution Association (CCTD) hit 770 yuan per tonne on Tuesday, rising 1.58 per cent from one day earlier and surging 55 per cent from the same period last year. The Fenwei CCI 5500 index, which tracks 5,500 Kcal/kg NAR thermal coal at northern ports . . .
