Chinese airlines remained in the red in the first half of the year due to high fuel prices and the depreciation of the Chinese yuan, according to the China Air Transport Association.

One of the reasons for their loss was that international markets lagged in the post-pandemic recovery, and passenger volume on international routes in May was less than one-third of 2019-level and the full recovery of the markets may not came until the end of next year, it said.

In addition, China’s high-speed railway has taken many passengers away from airlines, especially from short-haul air routes, thanks to a better network and higher service efficiency, and air cargo transport has an excessive transport capacity, which brings in smaller profits after three years’ high profits, it said.
