China’s National Mine Safety Supervision Bureau kicked off special safety production rectification for open-pit mines that are in normal production, under construction, and planning to resume production within 2023.

The rectification work will start in March 2023 and last until the end of the year to learn a lesson from the 2.22 open-pit mining accident in Inner Mongolia.

Companies will conduct self-inspection and self-correction by the end of March; key coal mines will undergo safety “examination” before the end of August; and supervision and inspection will be conducted before the end of October; and summarization and evaluation will be conducted before the end of December, it said.

The summary report of the rectification work will be submitted to the National Mine Safety Supervision Bureau before the end of January 2024, it added.

At least six were injured and 48 people remain missing in an accident in Alxa League in Inner Mongolia late February when a 180-meter (590-foot) tall slope gave way above the open-pit mine, according to state broadcaster CCTV.
