China’s coal production has been growing steadily this year and coal imports have increased rapidly, leaving coal supply and demand largely balanced, said the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) at a press briefing on Wednesday.

Coal inventories at power generators are currently at 198 million tonnes, equivalent to nearly 26 days’ consumption and rising by more than 23 million tonnes from the same period last year, it said.

China’s apparent consumption of natural gas in the first half of the year reached 194.9 billion cubic meters, rising by 6.7% from a year earlier, it said.

So far this summer, one-day gas consumption for power generation reached up to more than 250 million cubic meters, it said.
