Hubei Xingji Shidai Technology, set up by Chinese automaker Zhejiang Geely’s founder Eric Li a year ago, plans to roll out the world’s first consumer cellphone that can directly connect with low-orbit satellites.

The new phone will provide full global telecoms coverage from deserts to deep seas and jungles, the Wuhan-based startup said in a post on WeChat, citing comments made by Chief Executive Wang Yong.

Mobile phone networks cover no more than 21% of the world’s land surface, but satellites can achieve full coverage, and low-orbit communication technologies can spark massive growth by addressing the coverage issue, Wang said. The company’s technology will enable complete land coverage and multi-end connection with fifth-generation wireless networks, low-orbital satellite communications and near-field communications, he added.

The first of many products Xingji Technology plans to release will go on sale as soon as next year, Wang revealed, hinting at the future integration of the Xingji cellphone, augmented reality glasses and smart cars.
