The global crude steel output reached 158.8 million tonnes in June, falling by 0.1% from a year earlier, and for the first half of the year, global crude steel output fell 1.1% to 943.9 million tonnes, according to the World Steel Association.

Output in China, the world’s top producer and consumer of the metal, rose 1.3% year over year to 535.6 tonnes in January-June, the data showed.

China’s 2023 steel production is likely to continue hovering around the 1-billion tonne mark for the fourth year in a row, analysts at Citi said in a note.

Outside China, Citi expects steel output to rise in the second half of the year and drive full-year ex-China production to 847 million tonnes, up 3.6% from 2022.
