The world’s largest casino hub Macau recorded 48,180 inbound passenger traffic during the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday (10-12 September), according to data released by the Public Security Force.

On Saturday, there were 16,535 visitors entering the city through the different border checkpoints, a figure that dropped to 15,550 on Sunday and then increased on Monday to 16,095, showed the data.

The daily visitor average of 16,060 falls short of local tourism authorities’ target to be met by the end of September. The Macau Government Tourism Office had earlier said he hoped visitor arrivals could return to a daily tally of between 20,000 and 40,000 a day before the Chinese National Day holiday on October 1, as long as the COVID-19 situation remains stable.

The city’s tourism industry had expected that visitor arrivals were not likely to reach a satisfactory level during the holiday period as mainland authorities urged the public to stay put and reduce travel. From September 10 to October 31, mainland residents are required to present a negative nucleic acid testing (NAT) result conducted within 48 hours when travelling by air, train, and cross-province passenger vehicles or ships, and those who travel across provinces will be required to take a “voluntary nucleic acid test” upon arrival.
