Officials from US Pentagon, China’s foreign ministry held rare high-level talk

The Pentagon’s top official for Asia spoke with an official from China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Pentagon said, in a rare high-level talk between the two countries’ national security officials.

Ely Ratner, assistant secretary of defense for Indo-Pacific security affairs, and Yang Tao, director of department of North American and Oceanian affairs at China’s foreign ministry, discussed US-PRC defense relations, as well as regional security issues, a Pentagon spokesperson said in a statement.

The Assistant Secretary also emphasized the Department’s ongoing commitment to maintaining open lines of military-to-military communication between the US and China, it added.
