Southwest China’s Sichuan province activated level-one emergency response for ensuring power supply, the highest level under the current system, effective from August 21, as the power crunch worsens, according to a notice released by the local authority.

It marks the first time for the province to initiate a top-level emergence response after it introduced an energy supply contingency plan in January.

Since July this year, Sichuan province has witnessed the highest temperature, the lowest precipitation volume and the highest peak power load on record for the period of year and it has been hit by both heatwave and drought, leading to a several shortage in power supply, according to the notice.
