Smartphone maker Xiaomi has received NDRC approval for EV production – report

Chinese smartphone giant Xiaomi received approval from the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), China’s state planner, for the production of electric vehicles earlier this month, Reuters cited sources.

Xiaomi still needs the clearance from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), which is responsible for technical and safety regulation, before it can produce EVs. 

XIAOMI had pledged to splurge $10 billion in the automotive business over the next decade, with the goal of churning out its first car in the first half of next year.
