Tencent Holdings, ByteDance’s subsidiary Douyin Group, and Alibaba’s subsidiary Taobao Tmall Group are all preparing to make adjustments to their existing employee hierarchies and management systems this year, reported Chinese tech news outlet LatePost.

Tencent will reduce the number of levels of cadres and cut management roles, transforming the company into a leaner organisational structure, the report said.

Douyin is considering an adjustment to its “5 levels and 10 grades” staff ranking system, which has been in place for more than five years, though the plan has not yet been finalized, and ByteDance has set up a dedicated project team for rank and salary reform, the report said.

Taobao Tmall is mulling increasing the number of junior staff ranks, changing the “P” staff sequence to employee levels 14-28, while simplifying the promotion method, per the report. It also plans to introduce a Key Performance Indicator (KPI)-based appraisal system over the existing Objective Key Result (OKR) appraisal system, where KPI will take precedence in the new OKR-KPI parallel system.
