China’s bad loans at high level, smaller banks’ asset quality under pressure, warns banking regulator

Chinese banks' bad loans have increased to a" high level" due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, warns the banking regulator.

“Asset quality at smaller banks will be under pressure this year, and credit risks in some institutions will continue to increase,” said the China’s Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission (CBIRC) in a statement on Tuesday.

Chinese recorded rising soured debt and shrinking net interest margins, a gauge of banks’ profitability, amid the economic impact from a prolonged pandemic.
