China’s 2020 steel output, consumption to hit highest on record, said government think tank

China's steel product consumption is expected to hit a new record high of 981 million tonnes this year, rising 9.6 per cent or about 100 million tonnes from last year, according to a report released by the China Metallurgical Industry Planning and Research Institute (MPI), a government think tank.

The country's crude steel output is estimated to reach 1.05 billion tonnes this year, also an all-time high, rising 5.4 per cent from last year and jumping above 1 billion tonnes for the first time on record, said the institute.
