China’s passenger traffic in Spring Festival holiday expected to drop sharply amid recent coronavirus outbreaks

China's Spring Festival travel rush this year set to kick off on Thursday and booking data show that passenger trips will drop sharply compared to normal years as the government encourages people to stay put for the holiday to help contain the recent COVID-19 outbreak.

"This year's travel rush is different from previous ones as there are sporadic cases of novel coronavirus and outbreaks in certain areas," said Li Wenxin, deputy general manager of the China State Railway Group Co, at a press conference on January 15.
