Chinese power battery giant CATL will supply M3P batteries to Tesla in the fourth quarter of the year, according to Chinese tech news outlet LatePost.

The battery will be used in the Model Y that has 72-kWh battery pack and the model will be launched in early 2023, according to the report.

Tesla is also developing LMFP batteries, but with a long development cycle, it will first source such batteries from suppliers, the report said.

After completing sample testing, Tesla typically takes only 3 months from battery procurement to final vehicle production, the report said.

The lithium manganese iron phosphate (LMFP) material used in CATL’s M3P batteries will be supplied by Shenzhen Dynanonic Co, which plans to put 110,000 tons of LMFP material into production in the second half of this year, according to the report.

Last month, CATL’s chief scientist Wu Kai at an event that the company’s M3P battery was already in mass production and will be in use next year.

The M3P battery is a CATL battery based on a new material system that has a higher energy density than lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries and a lower cost than ternary batteries, Wu said.
