The city of Chengdu, capital of Southwest China’s Sichuan province, will lock down its 21 million residents starting Thursday night, in a move to contain the latest Covid flare-ups, making it the biggest city to shut since Shanghai’s two-month lockdown earlier this year.

The city will conduct city-wide Covid testing during the period of September 1 – 4, the local authority said.

Chengdu reported 106 confirmed Covid cases for August 31 and it has reported a total of 665 cases for the latest round of outbreak.
